2019 – White Island NZ – Volcanic Eruption

On 9 December 2019, the volcanic White Island in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty erupted. Six people died and many more were injured. Those seriously injured were transferred to the nearby Whakatane Hospital. Staff were quickly overwhelmed, with 14 victims requiring intensive care. The NCCTRC coordinated the deployment of trauma and intensive care experienced nursing staff in support.
