Dr Matthew O’Sullivan AM has been an AUSMAT member since 2018. As the Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Director of the NSW Biocontainment Centre, and Supervising Pathologist at Westmead Hospital, he played a pivotal role in Australia’s early response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been deployed to Christmas Island in February 2020 where AUSMAT established a quarantine facility to ensure the safe return of evacuees from Wuhan, China. He was later deployed to Fiji in 2021. Working closely alongside Fijian colleagues, AUSMAT provided medical assistance, supported patient flow management and strengthened infection control measures in makeshift facilities. Dr O’Sullivan also served as a member of the 2023 - 2024 National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre’s Pathology Working Group contributing his expertise to national preparedness and response efforts. His extensive contributions to medicine and infectious disease response were recognised in 2024 when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
