2024 – Vanuatu – Earthquake

On 17 December 2024, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the west coast of Port Vila, causing widespread destruction. At the request of the Vanuatu Government, AUSMAT deployed and arrived within 36 hours, marking the first use of the CareFlight G150 charter jet for an AUSMAT mission—enabling a rapid response supported by the Australian Government’s Department of Health and Aged Care. The initial team supported Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office and Ministry of Health, embedding at Vila Central Hospital (VCH). Two additional teams followed: a Surgical Specialist Cell, providing medical and surgical care; and a third team deployed to address vascular surgery needs and water sanitation challenges at VCH.
