2026 – Katherine, NT – ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle

In March 2026, the threat of ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle led to the evacuation and temporary closure of Katherine District Hospital. In response, AUSMAT were deployed to support NT Health and ensure continuity of healthcare services for the community.

AUSMAT established an Emergency Medical Team (EMT) field hospital, delivering a broad range of clinical services including emergency care, inpatient support, maternity services, radiology and laboratory capability. Clinicians and support staff from Katherine District Hospital were embedded within the operation, supporting ongoing patient care throughout the disruption.

While AUSMAT has deployed similar field hospital capabilities internationally, this marked the first time it had been deployed domestically at this scale.
