28 Feb 2022

AUSMAT personnel took part  in the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) SIMEX China Asia Pacific International Earthquake Response Exercise simulation, alongside 300 participants from across the globe in late 2021.

Despite the challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the Simex China 2021 was a great success with participants from more than 30 countries and 4 different international organisations connected from all over the world for the SIMEX held over 3 days from 24-26 November.

The SIMEX primarily focussed on preparedness of Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs), participants practiced and navigated response processes including COVID-19 screening, quarantine, customs, immigration and reception/departure centres.

World Health Organization (WHO) internationally classified EMTs participated alongside Chinese national medical teams virtually in a simulated response to a magnitude 8.0 earthquake in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province.

During the simulation it was reported that an estimated 70,000 people were killed and nearly 400,000 people were injured. Nine internationally classified teams responded with 49 national teams. As with any response, AUSMAT were supported by the NCCTRC team.

Director of Emergency Management at the NCCTRC Mr Terry Trewin took part in the exercise.

“AUSMAT personnel took full advantage of this fantastic opportunity to practice their response skills, establishing Australia’s EMT 2 facility and the management of waves of patients” Mr Trewin said.

“The entire exercise was conducted virtually and it was great to see team members from around Australia navigate the response system and perform at the high standard we have come to expect from AUSMAT.”
